Check in with yourself
Take the time to ask yourself how you’re feeling. Are you at risk for burning out? Are you sleeping well? Are you being less productive than usual? Are you moody? Do you use alcohol to relax? These could all be indications that you could risk burning out.
As humans we tend to fall into “self-sabotage-traps” to protect ourselves. To protect yourself you need a high amount of self-awareness. There are many traps you can fall into but these are the most common:
Being too adaptable is a bad thing
We are always told that being adaptable is great for your career, but actually too much of adaptability is not a good thing. This can lead to you overdoing it by trying so hard to please your boss and coworkers and fulfill all expectations. The danger of wanting to impress people with adaptability is the risk of sacrificing your own welfare. If you think you fit into this pattern, challenge yourself to say ‘no’ sometimes. You should establish bounds so you have time to relax and recharge after work.
Always aiming perfection is damaging
It’s important to challenge yourself, but being too much of a perfectionist can be dangerous to progress. The high standards can become unrealistic to match, and it can make you feel unable to deliver, which can lead to stress. Be kind to yourself instead and forgive yourself for not always being able to deliver perfection.
Set boundaries for yourself
If you love your job you might find it difficult to stop working. It’s important however that you take time off to have a life outside of your job, so you don’t risk burning out. There are plenty of things in life to be passionate about, so be careful not to only focus on your career.
By keeping this points in mind, Minetum believes you can avoid burning out during stressful times.
