Communication on-screen is a preference for the majority of millennials in the workforce. A Nielsen study shows that there is a huge gap between a millennial’s perception of their own skills and what employers actually think. About 62% of millennials believe that their oral communication skills are enough to help them succeed in the workforce, but only 28% of employers agree. Their ability to work with others is also questioned, because 64% of millennials think they work well with others but only 37% of employers agree.
While their communication skills are debatable, there are in fact numerous situations when a person’s communication skills will affect their career. Whether it be an interview, a networking event, sales pitch, or just a company meeting. No matter what the occasion is, it is key to be able to communicate effectively.

Minetum is here to offer 3 tips on how to improve your communication in the workplace:
- Body Language is Important!
The way you stand, where you place your hands, and your facial expressions affect how people perceive you.
Basic body language dos and don’ts that can be used in any work situation are: lean in to show that you are listening, smile and make eye contact with whoever is speaking, don’t fold your arms because it shows you are not interested.
- Don’t Hide Behind a Screen
Speak up and step out of your comfort zone. Hiding behind a screen to “communicate” with someone will not work as effectively as it would if you did it in person. Especially in the workplace, it is important to stand out, and be proactive with wanting to be the best version of yourself.
- Have Positive Thoughts
It is easy to overthink when you are worried about an upcoming work meeting. Negative thoughts like, “What if I say the wrong thing?” or “What if I stutter?” will only add to your stress. You need to have a positive mindset in tough situations.
Some positive things to think to yourself can be: “I hope I nail this presentation” or “What if my boss likes my idea?”
