Overcoming the Fear of Rejection

Overcoming any fear can be a feat, especially when it is the fear of feeling failure. Withholding yourself from rejection prevents you from progressing in your career and even your life. By simply understanding what rejection is and by seeing it as growth rather than a step backwards, your life will progress so much further. Even identifying this fear can be difficult but with the help of a Professionally Certified Coach, you may be able to move on faster.

Here are a few crucial points to grow your understanding on how to overcome the fear of rejection:

What is rejection?

According to Brian Tracy, rejection is an experience that everyone encounters in their life which thereafter, can leave us with a feeling of anxiety. Rejection is a powerful force which holds one back from achieving their goals and living life to the fullest. It can also come in many forms; whether it is work-related, romantic or even rejection from yourself. Although rejection can be a major obstacle, what really matters is how you react to rejection.

At Minetum, we have had much experience with clients struggling with a fear of rejection preventing them from furthering their career. Why do we fear rejection and how does it differ from failure?

Rejection promotes a feeling of insecurity and decreased confidence. This anxiety from past rejection can often cause us to shy away from the possibility of future rejection, holding us back from growth. This is what we refer to as failure. Failure and rejection are not the same. Failure is not following through with the action due to the fear of rejection and rejection is growth through attempting something and learning from your flaws. Ultimately, one needs to understand that fear of rejection will never fully go away but the fear of rejection is more comforting than the feeling of failure.

Why rejection is necessary

As outlined earlier, rejection is inevitable, you have experienced it before and you will experience it again. Through rejection, you can grow and rediscover yourself and the world around you. To really succeed, rejection must be a factor in your life in order to gain from your lack of knowledge and build upon your flaws. Rejection doesn’t define your future and by choosing to expand yourself upon rejection, you will be able to live your life to the fullest.
