AI has changed the way students apply for internships—but not in the way most people think.
Just a year or two ago, knowing how to use ChatGPT gave students a real advantage.
Today?
Almost every college student is using AI to write resumes, cover letters, LinkedIn profiles, and even internship applications.
The result is something few people expected.
Applications are starting to sound the same.
Recruiters are reading hundreds—sometimes thousands—of resumes filled with nearly identical phrases:
“Results-driven.”
“Passionate about learning.”
“Strong communication skills.”
“Team player.”
Ironically, the very tool designed to help students stand out has made many applications blend together.
The question is no longer:
“Can you use AI?”
Almost everyone can.
The question has become:
“What makes you different from everyone else using AI?”
AI Isn’t the Problem
Let’s be clear.
AI is an incredible tool.
We encourage students to use it.
It can help brainstorm ideas, improve writing, prepare for interviews, and organize thoughts.
But AI has one major limitation.
It cannot create experiences.
It can’t join a student organization for you.
It can’t build your professional network.
It can’t lead a project.
It can’t complete an internship.
And it certainly can’t tell your unique story if you haven’t taken the time to create one.
AI should enhance your work—not replace the work that actually makes you interesting to employers.

What Employers Are Looking For
One of the biggest misconceptions among college students is that a perfect resume leads to interviews.
In reality, employers are hiring people—not documents.
The students who consistently stand out are often the ones who have intentionally built experiences throughout college.
That might include:
- Completing internships
- Holding leadership positions in student organizations
- Volunteering
- Building relationships with professors and alumni
- Networking on LinkedIn
- Working on projects outside the classroom
- Learning new skills on their own
These experiences create stories.
Stories create memorable interviews.
And memorable interviews often lead to job offers.
The Students Who Will Thrive in the AI Era
Here’s the good news.
AI isn’t replacing ambitious students.
If anything, it’s making genuine initiative even more valuable.
When everyone has access to the same technology, employers naturally look beyond the resume.
They ask questions like:
- Has this student taken initiative?
- Can they communicate professionally?
- Have they demonstrated leadership?
- Are they curious?
- Have they built relationships?
- Can they solve problems?
Those qualities cannot be generated by ChatGPT.
They are developed over time.

Before You Return to Campus…
With fall semester approaching, this is the perfect opportunity to pause and ask yourself a few questions.
- Is my resume up to date?
- Does my LinkedIn profile reflect who I am today?
- Have I expanded my professional network this summer?
- Have I identified companies I’d love to intern with?
- Do I have a plan for what I want to accomplish over the next 12 months?
You don’t have to have your entire career figured out.
But you should have a direction.
The students who wait until senior year to think about internships often discover they’ve missed valuable opportunities that started much earlier.
One Small Step Can Change Everything
Career success rarely happens because of one big decision.
More often, it’s the result of dozens of small decisions made consistently over time.
Updating your resume.
Sending one networking message.
Joining a student organization.
Attending a career fair.
Applying for an internship even when you don’t feel 100% ready.
Those small actions build confidence—and momentum.
