Where to Find Internships Beyond LinkedIn and Indeed

If you’re looking for an internship, you’ve probably spent time scrolling through LinkedIn and Indeed, applying to positions, and waiting to hear back.

But what if some of your best opportunities aren’t on those job boards?

Finding an internship isn’t just about submitting applications. It’s also about knowing where to look, building relationships, and exploring opportunities you might otherwise miss.

Looking for ways to strengthen your internship search? Minetum’s College Career Coaching Program can help you build a career strategy and feel more confident taking your next steps.

Here are five places to start your search.

1. Your University’s Career Center

Your university’s career center can be a valuable resource. Many schools offer career fairs, employer networking events, resume reviews, and job platforms specifically for students. Some employers recruit directly through universities, so check your school’s career resources regularly.

2. Company Career Pages

Think about the industries and companies that interest you. Visit their websites and look for a Careers or Students and Graduates section. Some organizations post internships on their own websites before you find them elsewhere.

Tip: Make a list of 10 companies you’d like to work for and check their career pages regularly.

3. Alumni Networks

People who attended your university have already navigated the transition from college to a career. Reach out to alumni in fields that interest you and ask about their experiences or advice for students entering the industry.

You don’t have to ask for an internship directly. Building professional relationships can help you learn about opportunities and make valuable connections.

4. Professional Associations and Industry Events

Industry organizations, conferences, workshops, and networking events can connect you with professionals in your field. Look for student memberships, local events, and opportunities to meet people doing the work you hope to do.

These connections can help you learn more about your industry while expanding your network.

5. Direct Outreach to Employers

Consider reaching out to companies you’re interested in, even if they haven’t posted an internship. Research the organization, find the appropriate contact, and send a brief, personalized message introducing yourself and expressing your interest in gaining experience.

Not every company will have an opening, but taking initiative can help you discover opportunities you wouldn’t find on a job board.

Your Next Step

You don’t need to use every resource at once. Start by choosing two or three companies that interest you, checking your university’s career resources, and connecting with one professional in your desired field.

Finding an internship takes time, so stay organized, follow up when appropriate, and keep exploring different paths.

Your next opportunity might come from more than an application. It might come from a conversation, a connection, or taking the initiative to reach out.
